Animal Farming

One of Australia's largest meat producers, with capacity to produce approximately 500,000 animals per year, wishes to explore use of MBD's algal bioremediation to treat waste water and to provide animal feed.

It is anticipated that the improved quality of wastewater will enable its re-use for a range of applications, reducing the need for water purchase from an adjacent river or pumping from bores, resulting in reduced energy consumption and significant cash savings.

Macro algae with excellent bioremediation capabilities and a nutritional profile suited to the farm's animal species, will be selectively cultivated for this purpose.

In addition to the bioremediation and feed products MBD has trialed the use of algae strains that improve the digestion of cows with a reduction in methane production and an increase in nutrition transfer from the feed to the animal. These trials will continue through 2017.
